On July 13th, World Rock Day takes center stage, but behind the scenes, many rock superstars battle hidden health issues, particularly spine problems. Contrary to its name, this celebration is exclusively observed in Brazil, rooted in the genre’s explosive popularity in the 1990s.
Now, an esteemed neurosurgeon and rock enthusiast, MD. Guilherme Rossoni, sheds light on the discomfort endured by these music icons, emphasizing the urgent need for attention to their spinal health. Rock and roll legends invest countless hours rehearsing and contorting their bodies on stage, often subjecting themselves to repetitive motions and uncomfortable positions with their instruments.
Over time, these demanding conditions can lead to chronic pain and more severe spinal conditions. While many musicians endure muscle tension and spine issues, they typically only seek help when the pain becomes unbearable. MD. Guilherme Rossoni warns against this negligence, stating, “Musicians often consider pain to be a normal part of their profession and seldom take preventive measures.
If pain persists beyond a few weeks, seeking professional help is crucial to avoid exacerbating the problem.” Musicians, in general, possess limited awareness of how their craft can impact their physical well-being. Many find themselves grappling with conditions such as repetitive strain injury (RSI) and work-related upper limb disorders (WRULD). MD. Guilherme explains that the risk of injury can vary depending on the instrument: “Instruments that require body asymmetry, forcing the musician to contort themselves while playing, tend to cause more problems. Examples include the transverse flute, guitar, and violin.
Even instruments played while sitting, like the piano, can lead to issues due to incorrect posture. Depending on the musician’s physique, this can intensify the strain on the supporting structures of the spine, contributing to the development of specific injuries.”
Repetitive movements, improper postures, and excessive effort when playing the instrument are the primary culprits behind these spinal afflictions.
