Brazilian Plastic Surgeon discusses advances in plastic surgery, trends, and how procedures are reinventing themselves and moving away from standardized beauty

MD. Sérgio Cruz explains the transformation of aesthetic procedures in search of authenticity and personal acceptance

Over the years, plastic surgery has undergone significant changes. New techniques, technological advancements, and the evolution of aesthetic standards have dismantled the pursuit of standardized “perfection,” prioritizing the appreciation of individuality.

In an interview, plastic surgeon Sérgio Cruz, a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, highlights that current trends in plastic surgery are aligned with a more natural appearance, valuing the unique beauty of each individual. This approach not only aids in personal acceptance but also contributes to strengthening self-esteem.

Unlike in the past, when patients brought photos of celebrities as references, seeking to replicate specific physical features, there is now greater awareness of the importance of considering each person’s individual traits. The doctor emphasizes the need to tailor procedures to the specific needs and desires of each patient, aiming to harmonize the face and provide guidance on the most suitable options.

This shift in perspective is also reflected in rhinoplasty surgeries, where the concept of a traditionally thin and upturned “rhinoplasty nose” has become obsolete. Plastic surgeons now seek to enhance facial beauty by preserving the unique structure and characteristics of each patient’s nose, prioritizing facial balance and harmony. In addition to the pursuit of aesthetic beauty, plastic surgery plays an important role in patient care, providing improvements in quality of life.

Procedures are performed to correct congenital deformities, repair traumatic injuries, or enhance bodily functionality, promoting comfort and emotional confidence.

Dissatisfaction with one’s appearance can cause emotional trauma and affect individuals’ self-confidence and social life. Plastic surgery offers a solution for these individuals, allowing them to address their aesthetic concerns and feel embraced, accepting, and celebrating their authenticity.
