The dream of immigrating and living in England is a reality for many Brazilians. An interesting option is voluntary exchange, which allows you to live in the United Kingdom for up to 12 months with the possibility of renewal.

Dr. Livia Suassuna, a Brazilian lawyer specialized in immigration law in London, clarifies the main doubts about this type of exchange. “I consider it a great gateway to the United Kingdom, even for those who do not speak English fluently. You can work not only in England but also in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales,” highlights the immigration lawyer.
1- What is voluntary exchange? Also known as Charity Worker, voluntary exchange is an opportunity to obtain a visa for up to 12 months to work in institutions registered by the British government. There are more than 900 options, and the visa can be extended or converted into another category, such as a work visa.
2- What are the main costs? Airfare, Charity Worker visa fee (about £298), NHS health insurance (optional, £624 for stays of more than 6 months), and optional travel insurance. However, food and housing are covered by the institution, which helps offset the costs, according to the immigration lawyer.
3- What type of work is offered? Generally, these are unskilled jobs, such as working on a farm, taking care of animals, working in plantations, kitchens, cleaning, taking care of the elderly and special needs children, religious institutions, etc. You do not need to prove English proficiency or qualifications, and you will learn English in your daily life, as you can also attend government-funded schools.
4- Where to find the institutions? The list is on the gov.uk website. You need to apply for a position and go through an interview, usually via Skype. If approved, the institution issues a letter to request the visa.
5- How can Brazilians pursue voluntary exchange? “Voluntary exchange is a great option for Brazilians who dream of living in the United Kingdom but have a limited budget. It is an opportunity to legally live in the UK for up to a year, have new professional and personal experiences, learn and get to know other European countries. A dream that can come true, isn’t it?” questions and encourages lawyer Dr. Livia Suassuna.
